My mother, Ethel

Mom’s breathing is shallow and rapid. A sanitary white hospital pillow encircles her head. On the night stand a Bose Bluetooth speaker is gently playing Glen Miller’s “In the Mood.”

Maria, the nurse comes in and places a few drops of a morphine under Mom’s tongue. This helps her relax. It also dulls any pain. Maria asks us how we are doing and if we need anything. Jean, my wife, and I automatically nod that we are okay. With that, Maria…
